Jack woke up yesterday morning with a temp of 103.7. We called his doctor and she told us to give him some Tylenol and head to the ER. I thought they would tell us to continue to give him Tylenol and we could join my family for my dad's 60th birthday lunch, but that was not the case. Turns out, a temp over 100.5 in an infant less than 6 weeks old is not something they mess with and they ended up taking blood cultures, running a urine catheter and even doing a spinal tap. I was ok until the doctor told us that a fever this high is "life threatening" in 1/20 infants. The likelihood that this is viral is very high, especially since Kenzie ran a high fever one night last week and was couch-bound for the entire night. But, they don't take chances. His white blood cell count is high and they think that he may have a urinary tract infection, so they are giving him 2 different antibiotics, running fluids through an IV and alternating Tylenol and Motrin. His fever burned on all day yesterday and all night and finally broke this morning. They're going to keep him here until the cultures come back on his urine, so we're looking at at least another day in the hospital if not more.
It was such a relief to see him looking more like himself this morning. He wasn't able to focus on anything yesterday and was crossing his eyes and puckering up his lips and moaning all day. Very scary. This morning he was looking right at me and seemed much more content. We were up almost the entire night because he kept bending the arm that has his IV in it and the machine was beeping all night long. I had to call the nurse in to reposition him and reset the machine about 20 times, so we're both wiped out. He's taking a much needed nap now.
Tom called this morning to tell me that Katie woke up with a fever of 102 this morning. He called back a half an hour later to tell me that she had projectile vomited across the family room. And then she threw up in the tub. He said she's got that same glassy eyed look the Kenzie had and is just sitting and moaning. Seeing her like that will just break my heart. Hopefully this will all blow over soon and Tom and I will avoid catching it ourselves. I thought it was bad when the girls passed things back and forth, passing it between the three of them is just crazy.
I'll check in tomorrow, and if all goes well, hopefully we'll be sleeping in our own beds tomorrow night. Off to snuggle with my little man :)
